MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A pair of divers finished in the top three to lead the West Virginia University divers on the opening day of the Frank Elm Invitational in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Friday.
Senior Michael Proietto notched a runner-up finish in the finals on 3-meter, while junior Austin Smith finished just behind him in third.
"Today was a good day for the divers," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "On the women's side, it was a tough competition with 49 girls on 1-meter. I am pleased with all of our girls, they are starting to display consistency with their dive lists. Both Averly (Hobbs) and Maddy (Woods) had a good day. Averly has been solid on 1-meter all semester, and I'm thrilled with her progress. Maddy had a good day; she typically excels on 3-meter, so I was happy to see her show up on 1-meter.
"The men had a great day as well, we are competing with two guys down at the moment, so it was crucial for the men to rise up and compete. In prelims, once they overcame the jitters, all the boys settled in nicely, allowing Austin and Mike to qualify for finals tonight. The men were also consistent and stepped up to compete. Both Mike and Austin had outstanding finals and finished second and third on 3-meter."
Proietto posted a 328.65 in the finals to finish second, followed by Smith's 285.30 to place third. Freshman Caleb Keck also reached the finals, where he competed in the B Final and finished 12th overall with a score of 226.60.
For the women on 1-meter, sophomores Averly Hobbs and Madelyn Woods advanced to the B Final. Hobbs finished 13th overall with a 241.25, while Woods notched a 236.70 to place 15th overall.
The three-day Frank Elm Invitational, hosted by Rutgers University, continues on Saturday, with prelims at 9:30 a.m. ET and finals at 5 p.m. The men will compete on 1-meter and the women on 3-meter.
"All of the divers are excited about the meet and are looking to continue their success tomorrow with men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter," Grapner added.
