"This weekend will be a very good test to see where we are as a team at this point of the season," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "The teams have done a very good job this fall in training and competing. The competition this weekend will be some of the best among all the midseason invites, with three top-25 teams for the men and four for the women. This will provide the environment, competition and challenges that will prepare the teams to get to the next level, and that's what we are working so hard for. Staying within our team and swimming fast in the morning are keys to our weekend success."
This weekend marks the first time WVU has competed at Ohio State since the 2015-16 season. Joining the Mountaineer men's team at the invitational include No. 5 NC State, No. 13 Notre Dame, No. 16 Ohio State, Kentucky, Kenyon, Penn State, Pitt and Yale, while the women's team will compete against No. 12 NC State, No. 17 Kentucky, No. 18 Notre Dame, No. 23 Ohio State, Florida Gulf Coast, Kenyon, Marshall, Penn State, Pitt, Washington State and Yale.
The invite opens on Friday with the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 400 medley relay. Saturday's events include the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 800 freestyle relay. The meet concludes on Sunday with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.
Friday's diving events at Rutgers feature the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter. From there, the Mountaineers will compete in the men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter on Saturday, before participating in platform dives on Sunday.
The site gives WVU divers an opportunity to get their first look at the 2017 NCAA Zone A Championships, which will be hosted by Rutgers on March 5-7.
"The divers and I are looking forward to the competition this weekend," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "This is our first road meet, so the excitement to compete at another pool is motivating for all of us. We have spent the semester training for this meet; it is where our Zone Championship will be in held in March. There are a lot of good teams here, all from our zone, so it will be a good indicator for our preparation at the end of the season."
WVU last competed at the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend on Oct. 27-28, at the WVU Natatorium. The Mountaineer men's and women's team swept Seton Hall and Xavier, winning 28 of 32 total events during the two-day tri-meet.
The Mountaineers saw two records fall against the Pirates and Musketeers, including senior diver Logan McHenry's school-record performance on 3-meter. The Ventnor City, New Jersey, native earned a first-place score of 380.80, breaking the previous school record, which was set in 2009. Additionally, redshirt senior Nate Carr secured a pool record in the 400 individual medley, recording a winning time of 3:54.86.
