MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four Mountaineers advanced to the semifinals of their singles flights and two doubles teams earned wins as the West Virginia University women's tennis team began play at the FSU All-Conference Showdown in Tallahassee, Florida, on Friday.
"We had some solid individual performances today," coach
Miha Lisac said. "It was good to see Christina (Jordan), Giovanna (Caputo) and Paula (Goetz) come through in their matches after overcoming some adversity."
WVU opened the tournament with eight matches in three different flights of doubles play. In the Gold Draw, Paula Goetz and Christina Jordan fell to East Tennessee's Alory Pereira and Ioanna Markesini, 8-2, in the first round of competition. The duo then claimed a win in the second round over Western Kentucky's Moka Ito and Monica Malinen, 8-5.
In the Garnet Draw, Lyn Yuen Choo and Anne-Sophie Courteau fell in a close match to Sanae Ohta and Nancy Karaky of Troy, 8-7. In the second round, Choo and Courteau rebounded to top Hannah Ferrett and Carol Kerman of Furman, 8-4. The tandem will now compete in the consolation finals of the draw on Saturday.
The Mountaineers closed doubles play with two entries in the Spear Draw. Yvon Martinez and Kirsten White began the tournament with a match against Florida State's Ariana Rahmanparast and Julia Mikulski, where they fell 8-2. Also in the first round, Sofía Duran and Giovanna Caputo fell to Troy's Matea Mihaljevic and Maria Casas Blas, 8-6. In the second round, White and Martinez fell to Hannah Seizer and Efriliya Herlina, 8-2, while Wisconsin's Christina Zordani and Kelsey Grambeau topped Duran and Caputo, 8-5.
In the Spear Singles Draw, Jordan advanced by topping Nicole Drenga of South Florida in three sets, 6-3, 5-7 and 7-5. She will now face Lidia Burrows of Middle Tennessee State in the semifinals.
Choo and Caputo earned bids to the semifinals of the Speicher Singles Draw. Choo bested Anna Walter of Furman in two sets, 6-2 and 6-0, while Caputo defeated Dori Huckleby (Iowa), 6-4 and 7-6, to advance. Choo will now face Marta Peris of Middle Tennessee State and Caputo will take on Lucie Prochazkova on Saturday.
In the Osceola Draw, Goetz dropped Ferrett, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3, to advance to Saturday's semifinal round. Kirsten White earned a bye on Friday and will face MTSU's Luisa Zirilli on Saturday.
In singles action, Duran won the first set, but ultimately fell in the quarterfinals of the Garnet Singles Draw to FSU's Nandini Das, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-2. Duran will face Silvia Bordes (UCF) in the consolation semifinals on Saturday.
Courteau fell in the quarterfinals of the Seminole Singles Draw to Natalia Serrano of UCF, 6-3 and 6-3, and will now face Anastasia Reimchen of Iowa in the consolation semifinal round.
The FSU All-Conference Showdown resumes for the Mountaineers on Saturday, Nov. 11, with play slated to begin at 9 a.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
