MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University women's tennis team recorded four wins in singles and two doubles victories to close out the final day of the Viking Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Mountaineers began the final day with a singles match against Cincinnati and were victorious in four of the six matches. At the No.1 position,
Anne-Sophie Courteau bested Caroline Morton in three sets, 6-7 (5), 6-4 and 11-9.
Giovanna Caputo rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Alexia Coutino on the second court, 3-6, 6-4 and 10-7. Cincinnati's Ioana Guna bested
Christina Jordan, 6-1 and 6-2, on court No. 3. Sofía Duran claimed WVU's third victory of the morning as she defeated Antonella Bramato, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.
Lyn Yuen Choo fell to Emma Miceli, 6-4 and 7-5, at the No. 5 slot. At the No. 6 position,
Paula Goetz dropped Anna Philp in two sets, 6-1 and 6-3.
WVU then faced host Cleveland State in a doubles match to wrap up the Viking Invitational. The Mountaineers claimed two of the three matches against the Vikings. Jordan and Goetz fell to Isabella Spindler and Aleksandra Golawska, 6-2, on the first court. Duran and Courteau bested Gaby Schoenberg and Jana Schober 6-3 at No. 2 and the duo of Caputo and Choo dropped Blanche Lenoan and Kristina Fernandez, 6-3, on the third court.
In all, WVU won eight doubles matches and 12 singles matches over the course of the weekend. Courteau and Caputo led the Mountaineers with three singles victories apiece in their first collegiate tournament. Caputo, Courteau and Choo each registered three doubles wins in the Viking Invite.
"Overall, I thought there were some good things during the weekend that we can build upon," coach
Miha Lisac said. "Today we rebounded well from yesterday's matches and finished the tournament well.'
The Mountaineers will head to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships from Friday, October 13 to Tuesday, October 16. The Atlantic regionals will be held on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
