MORGANTOWN, W.Va –
The West Virginia University women's tennis team registered three wins in singles and doubles play on Saturday at the Cleveland State Viking Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio.
"We had a couple of great opportunities to learn from and get better today," coach
Miha Lisac said. "It was great to see some upperclassmen and freshmen step up and come through today. We will continue to get better over the weekend and have another day of opportunities tomorrow."
WVU began the second day of competition with a singles match against Cleveland State, where the Mountaineers split the six matches with the Vikings. At the No. 1 singles position, Sofía Duran fell to Isabella Spindler, 6-2 and 6-4. The Vikings also won at the No. 2 slot as Aleksandra Golawska defeated
Christina Jordan, 6-3 and 7-5. The Mountaineers earned their first victory of the day on the third court as
Lyn Yuen Choo bested Jana Schober in two sets, 6-1 and 6-0.
Paula Goetz fell to CSU's Gaby Schoenberg in two tiebreak sets, 7-6 (3) and 7-6 (3) at the No. 4 position. Freshman
Giovanna Caputo registered her second win as a Mountaineer, besting Blanche Lenoan, 6-2 and 6-1, at No. 5. Fellow freshman
Anne-Sophie Courteau also registered a win, besting Kristina Fernandez, 6-3 and 7-6 (5).
Following the singles match with Cleveland State, three consolation singles matches were played between the Mountaineers and Cincinnati. Senior
Yvon Martinez bested Amanda Huser, 6-4, 2-6 and 10-8.
Abigail Rosiello fell to Maria Teixido Garcia, 6-0 and 6-1.
Kirsten White won the first set 6-4, but was unable to claim the victory as Ellee Bullock won the final two sets, 6-4 and 10-5.
In the afternoon session, the Mountaineers faced Cincinnati in doubles competition. On the second court, the tandem of Goetz and Choo bested Antonella Bramato and Alexia Coutino, 7-5. The Bearcats would go on to take the next two matches as Duran and Jordan fell, 6-3, and Courteau and Caputo dropped a 6-4 decision.
WVU closed the second day of the Viking Invitational with a doubles tilt against Akron. The Mountaineers took two of the three matches against their counterparts. Jordan and Duran dropped Rita Pedroso and Carli Knezevich, 6-4, on the first court. The tandem of Courteau and Caputo bounced back to defeat Anna Uljanov and Madison Wolfe, 7-5. On the third court, Abigail and Yvon fell in the tiebreaking set, 7-6 (4) to Luisa Echeverry and Waverly Wituski.
The Viking Invitational wraps up on Sunday, Oct. 8, as West Virginia takes on Cincinnati in a singles match at 9:00 a.m. ET, at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. WVU will then face Cleveland State at 11:30 a.m. to close the tournament.
