MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University rowing team opened the fall season with a scrimmage against Duquesne and Dayton on the Monongahela River in Morgantown on Saturday, Oct. 7.
The first round of racing consisted of each teams' varsity eight boats. The teams competed in four paced races, beginning at a 16-rate and increasing to a pace of 24 strokes per minute in four separate races.
"Early season scrimmages are great for helping us identify what we're doing well and what needs more attention," coach Jimmy King said, "I was pleased to see all of our crews make adjustments and improvements through both rounds of competition. Off the water, we spent considerable time discussing how we can be better and now it's a matter following through and actually doing it."
After a short break, the Mountaineers, Dukes and Flyers competed in the same style pieces with the varsity four boats. The three teams each used three separate boats in the 'A', 'B' and 'C' races.
"Thanks to Dayton and Duquesne for joining us on the Mon' today," King said. "We had beautiful conditions for our scrimmage and were pleased to host them on our home water."
