MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams host a pair of Big East Conference opponents on Oct. 27-28 at the WVU Natatorium.
The Mountaineers welcome Seton Hall and Xavier for the two-day tri-meet, starting with Friday's diving events at 5 p.m. ET, with swimming events slated to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday's action gets underway at 10 a.m.
"We've had three really good weeks of training since the West Virginia State Games," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "With that said, we need to see the hard work that we've done translate into our swims this weekend."
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, WVU swimmers will wear pink caps this weekend. Additionally, representatives from the WVU Medicine Cancer Institute will be collecting donations for its pink shirts benefiting its breast cancer program during the meet.
Friday's events include the 400 medley relay, 1,000 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 50 freestyle. Saturday will feature the 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay. On springboard, 1- and 3-meter dives will be performed on Friday.
"I'm excited about the format; we are doing half of a normal dual meet on Friday and the other half on Saturday," Riggs said. "This will allow the athletes to really focus on one or two events per session, which should create some fast swims for all the teams. Both Seton Hall and Xavier are having very good starts to their seasons. We'll definitely have to race better than we did three weeks ago to get the victories."
Friday marks the third consecutive year Seton Hall and Xavier visit Morgantown. WVU has earned victories over each school the last two seasons. In 2016, the men's team topped Seton Hall, 204-157, while also taking down Xavier, 221-133. The Mountaineer women defeated the Pirates, 228-128, a year ago, and earned a 206-144 win over the Musketeers.
WVU last competed at the West Virginia State Games on Oct. 6-7. Both the WVU men's and women's teams earned first-place team finishes, combining to win 35 of 40 total events.
The Mountaineer men, who went a perfect 20 for 20 at the meet, earned a total of 1,899 points at the West Virginia State Games, winning the meet for the seventh consecutive season. The women's team tallied 1,262.5 points and a first-place finish for the sixth time in seven years.
The Mountaineers swept this season's first Big 12 bi-weekly awards on Oct. 19. Following a record-setting weekend at the West Virginia State Games in which he won eight total events, redshirt senior Nate Carr was named the Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Week. Sophomore Morgan Bullock, who won seven total events at the West Virginia State Games, earned Big 12 Women's Swimmer of the Week honors.
In diving, senior Logan McHenry was named the Big 12 Men's Diver of the Week for his two victories on the 1- and 3-meter dives at the West Virginia State Games, while junior Julia Calcut was selected as the Big 12 Women's Diver of the Week after earning a victory in the 1-meter dive at the season-opening meet.
Parking on Friday and Saturday will be available in the parking lots surrounding the WVU Coliseum and WVU Natatorium.
