MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by five wins in singles play, the West Virginia University women's tennis team concluded play at the Martha Thorn Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 22, in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers began the final day of the tournament with a singles match against Miami (OH). West Virginia claimed three of six matches, with all three victories coming in straight sets. At court No. 2,
Paula Goetz dropped Anastasiia Visiukhin, 6-3, 6-1.
Giovanna Caputo then bested Makenzie Meyers, 6-0, 6-1 on the fourth court. At the No. 6 slot,
Kirsten White defeated Janelle Ghanem, 6-1, 6-2. On the first court,
Christina Jordan fell, 6-1, 6-1, while
Abigail Rosiello was edged 6-2, 6-4. At No. 3,
Anne-Sophie Courteau won her first set, but would ultimately fall in a third-set tiebreaker to drop the match (4-6, 6-2, 10-5). Rosiello also dropped an additional match to the RedHawk's Emily Struble, 6-2, 6-0.
"We had a lot of competitive opportunities this weekend, which was great for us to learn and get better," coach
Miha Lisac said. "We will take the lessons from the weekend and continue to apply that to our work this fall."
WVU then faced James Madison in three matches and Miami (OH) in one match to wrap up singles play. The Mountaineers bested the Dukes in two of three matches.
Lyn Yuen Choo defeated Jona Roka at No. 1, 7-5, 6-2, to open the second round of singles. Caputo won her second match of the day when she dropped Michaela Kluska, 6-3, 6-2, on the third court. On the second court, Jordan fell to JMU's Diane Flament, 6-1, 6-4.
West Virginia concluded the weekend with two doubles matches against Miami and a match against JMU.
The Mountaineers split the two doubles matches against the RedHawks, as Goetz and Caputo bested Visiukhin and Kalita, 6-3, and the tandem of Courteau and Choo fell to Ponomareva and Babunski, 6-4.
Rosiello and White battled back from an early deficit to tie the match at five-all, but eventually fell to JMU's Roka and Owens, 7-5.
The Mountaineers will take a week off from competition before travelling to Louisville, Kentucky, for the Louisville Tennis Classic on Nov. 3-5. West Virginia will face Ball State, Louisville and Michigan State over the course of the three-day tournament.
