MORGANTOWN, W.Va –
West Virginia University tennis junior
Paula Goetz earned a win in the singles qualifiers as the Mountaineers opened play at the ITA Regional Championship in Blacksburg, Virginia, on Friday.
Goetz began the weekend for the Mountaineers in the singles qualifiers, where she bested James Madison's Abby Amos in three sets, 3-6, 6-2 and 6-3 in the first round. Goetz would go on to fall to No. 1-seeded Nina Sorkin in the second round of qualifiers, 6-4 and 6-1.
"Paula had two physical matches today," fifth-year coach
Miha Lisac said. "She handled a lot of situations well on the court. Hopefully she will compete to move in the right direction."
In the doubles main draw, Goetz and
Lyn Yuen Choo fell to Rebekah Anderson and Ashley Bongart of Liberty in the tiebreaking set, 8-7 (4).
"In doubles, we had a slow start," Lisac said. "In that situation, you have to climb back and we did, but ended up losing the tiebreaker. That slow start is something that we have to get better at. We have to continue to get better."
The tournament resumes for the Mountaineers on Saturday, Oct. 14, as Choo takes on Emma Petersen of James Madison in the first round of the singles main draw. The match will take place at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Tech.
