Mountaineers Open Spring Ranked No. 2

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team opens the second portion of its 2016-17 season ranked No. 2 in the College Rifle Coaches Association of American (CRCA) Poll.
This week’s rankings are the first of the year using the NCAA Team Qualifier System. In this system, an average is derived using a team’s top three scores from three different ranges. The Mountaineers moved up one spot to No. 2 with an average of 4719.67, based on scores of 4724 (at Akron), 4721 (at Ohio State) and 4714 (WVU Rifle Range).
TCU sits at No. 1 with an average of 4724.67, and Murray State follows WVU at No. 3 with a 4717.0 average. Air Force owns a 4694.67 average and ranks No. 4, and Kentucky ranks No. 5 with a 4693.67 average.
Ohio State ranks No. 6 with a 4676.67 average. Alaska-Fairbanks, the Mountaineers’ next opponent, checks in at No. 7 with a 4673.33 average. Nebraska follows at No. 8 (4667.33 avg.), and Nevada (4665.0 avg.) and Memphis (4663.67 avg.) round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers (7-0, 5-0 GARC) resume competition season on Tuesday, Jan. 10, with the first of four relays against the Nanooks scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at the WVU Rifle Range. Admission is free, and fans are encouraged to stop in throughout the day to cheer on WVU.
