MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team is nationally ranked in consecutive weeks for the first time this season, as the Mountaineers maintain their hold at No. 25 in this week’s Road to Nationals Rankings.
Despite WVU’s season average moving up to 195.031 following a season-high score of 196.3 in wins over No. 7 Denver (195.9), Towson (194.775) and Temple (193.625) at the WVU Coliseum on Jan. 29, the team did not move in today’s rankings.
The Mountaineers also are nationally ranked on vault and floor. WVU moved up three spots to No. 16 on vault (48.994) and jumped five spots to No. 20 on floor (48.888).
Individually, sophomore Kirah Koshinski continues to rank nationally on vault and floor. The Berwick, Pennsylvania, native moved up one spot to No. 17 on vault (9.881) and dropped two spots to No. 15 on floor (9.894). Junior Zaakira Muhammad also is ranked on vault and moved up seven spots this week to No. 22 (9.863).
Oklahoma (197.781) sits at No. 1 for the third straight week. LSU (197.588) follows at No. 2, and Florida (197.431) ranks No. 3. Utah (197.075) and UCLA (196.617) sit at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Alabama (196.440) ranks No. 6 and is followed by Michigan (196.381) at No. 7 and Denver (196.25) at No. 8. Georgia (196.115) and Kentucky (196.035) round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers moved up to No. 4 in the Southeast Region. The squad also ranks No. 3 on vault, No. 4 on floor and balance beam (48.594) and No. 6 on uneven bars (48.556).
Koshinski is the top-ranked Mountaineer regionally and ranks No. 4 on floor. She also ranks No. 6 on vault. Muhammad follows Koshinski in both event rankings and checks in at No. 7 on vault and No. 13 on floor (9.825).
Sophomore Robyn Bernard ranks No. 21 on floor (9.792), and freshman Julia Merwin ranks No. 25 on vault (9.762).
Senior Alexa Goldberg paces the team’s bars lineup and ranks No. 5 (9.825). Sophomore Tiara Wright follows at No. 11 (9.813), and Bernard ranks No. 21 (9.75).
Junior Jordan Gillette ranks a team-best No. 11 on beam (9.825), and sophomore Carly Galpin follows at No. 16 (9.808).
Goldberg also ranks No. 20 in all-around (38.025).
WVU did not move in the Big 12 Conference rankings and continues to sit at No. 3 overall, No. 3 on vault, beam and floor and No. 4 on bars.
Koshinski ranks a team-high No. 4 on floor and No. 5 on vault. Muhammad also ranks No. 7 on vault. Gillette ranks No. 5 on beam and is followed by Galpin at No. 8, and Goldberg ranks No. 8 on bars and in the all-around.
The Mountaineers return to the road this weekend for the first of three meets away from Morgantown. First up is a Beauty and the Beast meet at Kent State on Saturday, Feb. 4, with action inside the M.A.C. Center set to begin at 2 p.m.
