MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 22-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team returns to the road to face No. 12/13 Texas on Sunday, Jan. 29, in a 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT matchup at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
Sunday’s contest will be televised nationally on FS1 with Ron Thulin and Brenda VanLengen broadcasting the game. The broadcast will also be available on the FOX Sports Go app (with TV provider login).
Dan Zangrilli and Meg Bulger will have the call on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Fans can listen to various affiliates across the state (click here for full list), WVUsports.com, the WVU Gameday app and TuneIn.
West Virginia (16-5, 4-5) and Texas (15-4, 9-0) conclude the regular-season series on Sunday. The Longhorns won the previous matchup, 73-63, in Morgantown on Jan. 14. UT outscored WVU, 43-24, in the second and third quarters to collect the win. Teana Muldrow had a season-high 22 points, while Lanay Montgomery grabbed 14 rebounds and tallied 12 points.
The Mountaineers are aiming for their first win in Austin after UT has won the previous four contests. West Virginia is also seeking its first win over a ranked opponent on the road since toppling No. 21/20 Oklahoma State, 61-49, on Jan. 17, 2015, in Stillwater.
“Texas plays extremely hard,” coach Mike Carey said. “They get up the lane and they’re very physical on defense. When we were not aggressive with the basketball and taking care of the basketball that created a lot of easy buckets for them on the other end. We’re going to have to do a good job of being aggressive offensively, but also defensively, by not letting them get to the rim. If we go out there and stay focused and do the things I know we can do, it will be a very good basketball game.”
Texas has won 13 consecutive games after dropping four of its first six. The Longhorns most recently picked up a 77-69 win at TCU on Jan. 25.
Offensively, the Longhorns are averaging 74.5 points per game and shooting 45.3 percent (567-of-1252) from the field. UT is fourth nationally with a +11.8 rebounding margin and 19th in the NCAA with a +15.7 scoring margin.
Guard Brooke McCarty leads Texas with 13.8 points per game, 43 three-pointers and 64 assists. Ariel Atkins is second on the squad with 13.3 points per game. Freshman Joyner Holmes is averaging 11.8 points and 7.8 rebounds, while Kelsey Lang follows with 9.5 points and a team-leading 8.5 rebounds per game.
WVU picked up an 89-79 win over Texas Tech on Wednesday. The Mountaineers staved off a Lady Raider comeback attempt in the third quarter and picked up their 11th home victory. Muldrow and Montgomery combined for 43 points and 18 rebounds in the triumph.
Tynice Martin leads West Virginia with 17.5 points per game, which ranks second in the league. Muldrow follows with 14.8 points per game. Montgomery is averaging 12.4 points and 9.7 rebounds through 21 games.
Montgomery continues to lead the nation with a 69.4 field goal percentage (111-of-160) and is sixth nationally with 3.5 blocks per game. Montgomery was most recently named one of the nation’s toughest defenders by HeroSports. Fans can vote for their favorite defender at HeroSports.com.
Other WVU Big 12 leaders include Chania Ray’s 6.0 assists per game and Alexis Brewer’s 50 percent (21-of-42) three-point field goal percentage.
West Virginia’s 6.8 blocked shots per game is third nationally and the team’s +18.2 scoring margin is 13th in the NCAA. WVU is averaging 77.6 points per game, while surrendering 59.4 points per game to opponents.
Following Sunday’s game, the Mountaineers take a midweek break before resuming action against Iowa State on Saturday, Feb. 4, in a noon tipoff.
