MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia university women’s basketball junior guard Chania Ray was named the Big 12 Conference Co-Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Ray led West Virginia with 20.0 points, 8.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds as the Mountaineers split the opening weekend of Big 12 action. The Alexandria, Virginia, native scored 17 points, which included eight from the charity stripe, in an 83-61 win at TCU. She paced the Mountaineers with nine assists and collected a career-best six steals.
In Sunday’s loss at Kansas State, Ray made seven field goals, with six of those coming from behind the arc, and finished with a career-high 23 points while dishing out seven assists. Her six made triples were tied for third-most by a Mountaineer junior in a game. From the charity stripe during the two contests, Ray made 11-of-12 attempts for 91.7 percent.
Ray is averaging 9.5 points per game this season and is second in the Big 12 with 6.1 assists per contest. Ray shared the weekly honors with Oklahoma’s Peyton Little. The Big 12 honor is the first for Ray and the second women’s basketball player of the week accolade for a Mountaineer since joining the league in 2012-13.
