MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will face two Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) opponents this weekend in Morgantown.
WVU will face No. 16 Navy on Friday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. in the WVU Rifle Range. On Sunday, Jan. 22, WVU will compete against No. 8 Nebraska beginning with the smallbore discipline at 8 a.m. in the WVU Rifle Range. The match will then move to the indoor track inside the WVU Shell Building, and the air rifle portion of the match is set to start at 1 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to attend the air rifle match between WVU and Nebraska inside the WVU Shell Building. Parking and admission are free, and there will be bleacher seating available as well.
Following Sunday’s match, the Mountaineers will be available to meet with fans and sign autographs.
“This weekend is a great chance to compete against two good conference teams,” Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said.
The Mountaineers (8-0, 5-0 GARC) return to competition following a 4717-4688 home win against No. 7 Alaska-Fairbanks on Jan. 10.
“There were certainly a lot of great things from the first match weekend. A lot of strong performances on the mental side, how the athletes competed and how they shot, so there was a lot we can build on,” Hammond added.
WVU defeated Navy 4714-4636 last season, scoring 2381-2339 in air rifle and 2333-2297 in smallbore. The Mountaineers hold a 25-8 all-time record against the Midshipmen.
Most recently, Navy came in third place at the President’s Trophy Match in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Nov. 5, with a score of 4607.
The Mountaineers defeated the Huskers 4714-4654 last season, scoring 2376-2364 in air rifle and 2338-2290 in smallbore. WVU holds an 11-3 all-time record against Nebraska.
In its last match, Nebraska defeated Army 4665-4647 on Jan. 16 in West Point, New York.
“Our goals are always to shoot the best we can, to work on our individual performances and to control the things we can,” Hammond said.
Navy and Nebraska will compete in a shoulder-to-shoulder match in the WVU Rifle Range on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
