Mountaineers Remain at No. 2

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– The West Virginia University rifle team ranks No. 2 in this week’s College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll.
This week’s rankings are the second of the year using the NCAA Team Qualifier System. In this system, an average is derived using a team’s top three scores from three different ranges.
The Mountaineers (8-0, 5-0 GARC) remain at No. 2 with an average of 4720.67, based on scores of 4724 (at Akron), 4721 (at Ohio State) and 4717 (at WVU Rifle Range).
Along with WVU, the top three teams in this week’s poll hold averages above 4700.
TCU stays at No. 1 with an average of 4724.67, and Murray State is ranked No. 3 with a 4717 average.
Air Force comes in at No. 4 with an average of 4694.67, while Kentucky sits at No. 5 with a 4693.67 average.
Alaska-Fairbanks moves up one spot to No. 6, holding a 4682 average, and Ohio State ranks No. 7 with an average of 4676.67.
Nebraska remains at No. 8 with a 4673.67 average, while NC State moves up to No. 9 with a 4667.33 average.
Nevada rounds out the top 10 with an average of 4665.
The Mountaineers return to competition this weekend with a pair of Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) matches. WVU will face Navy on Friday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. in the WVU Rifle Range. On Sunday, Jan. 22, WVU will compete against No. 8 Nebraska beginning with the smallbore discipline at 8 a.m. in the WVU Rifle Range. The match will then move to the indoor track inside the WVU Shell Building, and the air rifle portion of the match is set to start at 1 p.m.
