Bullock Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After going a perfect three-for-three, winning all three of her individual races, West Virginia University freshman swimmer Morgan Bullock has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Bullock recorded three individual wins and a relay victory against Big 12 foe TCU on Jan. 14, at the WVU Natatorium. In the 100 butterfly, Bullock’s win in 56.53 was nearly two seconds faster than the fastest TCU swimmer. She was just as fast in the 200 butterfly, winning by more than two seconds, with a 2:04.75, against TCU. Her 200 butterfly time was nearly seven seconds faster than the fastest TCU swimmer.
Bullock rounded out the meet individually with a win in the 200 individual medley. A 209.33 gave Bullock a 0.65-second win against TCU. She capped the meet with the 400 freestyle relay, leading WVU to a nearly five-second win (3:33.38).
This Week in Women’s Basketball: No. 24 West Virginia opens a two-game road swing with a visit to Kansas on Wednesday, Jan. 18, in an 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. matchup with the Jayhawks … Wednesday’s game is televised on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app … WVU then travels to Waco, Texas, on Saturday, Jan. 21, for a 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT matchup at No. 2 Baylor … Saturday’s contest is televised locally on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh and throughout the nation on the FOX Sports Network.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia dropped a pair of games, including a 75-66 loss at Texas Tech last Wednesday and a 73-63 contest to No. 16/17 Texas on Saturday … WVU led by as many as 10 against the Lady Raiders before TTU outscored WVU, 40-18, in the second and third quarters … the Mountaineers rallied to tie the game with three minutes remaining, but fell short in the contest … WVU led by six early in the game against Texas before allowing the Longhorns to outscore WVU, 43-24, in the second and third quarters … the Mountaineers rallied to cut the game to eight late in the fourth quarter, but were unable to trim the deficit any further.
Notes: A season-high 4,118 people attended the matchup between the Mountaineers and the Longhorns … four Mountaineers scored in double-digits against Texas, marking the 10th time this season that four players have scored 10 or more points … Teana Muldrow scored a season-high 22 points … Muldrow made a free throw in 12 straight games after going 2-5 from the charity stripe … Chania Ray led the Mountaineers with three assists and has had multiple assists in 20 straight games … Lanay Montgomery recorded her 16th career double-double and seventh this season with a 12 point, 14 rebound performance against Texas … Montgomery went 5-of-8 (62.5%) from the field and has shot 40% or better in 12 straight games … Montgomery has grabbed a rebound in 92 straight games … Montgomery blocked three Longhorn shots and has recorded a block in 53 of the last 56 games … Tynice Martin scored 14 points, marking the 20th straight games that she has scored in double-figures … Martin also extended her streak of consecutive games with a steal to 10.
Coach Mike Carey after Saturday’s loss to Texas: “At least we didn’t quit playing. Give them credit for that in the fourth quarter. This is two games in a row, in the second and third quarter, the same thing. Texas Tech we scored six points in the second quarter and we scored eight here. Give Texas credit they have a lot of athletes.”
This Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers open their 2017 home season at the WVU Coliseum against No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA National Champion Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m.
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU dropped a 194.025-193.875 decision at Pitt on Jan. 13, at Fitzgerald Field House … the Mountaineers (1-1) defeated the Panthers on each event but uneven bars, winning vault (48.8), balance beam (48.425) and floor (48.85) … WVU scored 47.8 on bars … sophomore Kirah Koshinski and junior Zaakira Muhammad tied for the vault victory with matching 9.85 marks … Koshinski also earned a share of the floor win with a season-high 9.875 … sophomore Carly Galpin made her season debut on balance beam and tied for the win with a 9.825 score … classmate Tiara Wright paced the team on bars and finished third overall with a season-high 9.8.
Notes: Junior Robyn Bernard passed the 500 career-point plateau on Friday night and now shows 502.25 points … despite the loss, WVU continues to lead the all-time series, 57-13-2 … Koshinski ranks No. 16 nationally on vault and No. 26 on floor exercise … Muhammad ranks No. 32 on vault, and junior Jordan Gillette ranks No. 7 on balance beam … Saturday also marks the team’s Big 12 Conference opener.
This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia will have two weeks off before the team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to compete at the PSU National Open from Jan. 27-28.
Last Week in Track and Field: The West Virginia University track and field team won three events on Saturday at the WVU Open as the team hosted its second and final home meet of the season at the WVU Shell Building … the Mountaineers also added five second-place finishes … WVU’s first victory came in the women’s high jump thanks to sophomore Faith Penny, marking 1.71 meters … redshirt freshman Candace Jones won the women’s 500-meter run with a time of 1:18.46 … sophomore Chaqieta Robinson followed in second place, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:19.22 … in relay competition, a West Virginia team of Jones, Welker, McNeil and Robinson finished first in the women’s 4x400-meters with a time of 4:11.00 … with a season-best time, junior Bria Welker finished second in the women’s 60-meter dash in 8.10, while junior Shamoya McNeil came in a close third with a career-best time of 8.11 … junior Meghan Jean-Baptiste placed second in the women’s long jump with a mark of 4.87 meters and freshman Gina Cuneo, topping her season-best score, completed the long jump with a mark of 4.68 meters, placing her in third … in the women’s pole vault, junior Sara Finfrock placed second with a mark of 3.65 meters … McNeil added a second place finish in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 27.53.

Coach Sean Cleary after the WVU Open: “Well this is it, the beginning of the indoor season really officially starts today. We had about half the group competing today. I think it was a good rust-buster. It was good to see the team in one place at one time. Ultimately I believe this will help us for two weeks from now when we actually hit the road. Scheduling home meets are always fun because you sleep in your own bed, the parents are here, there is some atmosphere in this building today, so we’ll take a little bit of momentum, we’ll inject a number of new faces into the next competition and we’ll probably learn a lot more about who we are in two weeks once we go to Penn State.”

But today, with Devin (Brown) starting us off strong, I believe our men continue to feed off his energy. Our freshman Dayton (Garrett) had a great win as well today. It was a total team effort.”
This Week in Rifle: The No. 2-ranked Mountaineers play host to Navy on Friday, Jan. 20, at the WVU Rifle Range … the team will then welcome No. 8 Nebraska on Sunday, Jan. 22 … the smallbore relay on Sunday will be held at the WVU Rifle Range, while the air rifle relay will follow at the WVU Indoor Track … fans are welcome to join the team in the afternoon, with air rifle set to begin at 1 p.m.
Last Week in Rifle: WVU (8-0, 5-0 GARC) opened its spring season with a 4717-4688 win over No. 7 Alaska-Fairbanks on Jan. 10, at the WVU Rifle Range … the Mountaineers shot 2343 smallbore and 2374 air rifle to earn the discipline team wins … sophomore Ginny Thrasher earned the smallbore victory with a 590 (196 kneeling, 199 prone, 195 standing) mark … she tied freshman Milica Babic for second place in air rifle with matching 597 marks.
Notes: WVU’s aggregate score was its top mark since shooting 4721 in a win at Ohio State on Oct. 23 … WVU has shot 4700 or better in all but eight matches this year … Babic also shot a program-record 200 prone mark … five Mountaineers combined for the team’s scores: Babic, Thrasher, Elizabeth Gratz, Jean-Pierre Lucas and Morgan Phillips.
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The West Virginia women’s swimming and diving team continues Big 12 action at Iowa State on Jan. 21, at noon ET … the men and women then return to the road for a pair of races at Bucknell and Villanova in two weeks ... WVU faces Bucknell on Friday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. ET, before traveling to Villanova the following day for a 1 p.m. ET matchup.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia sent its seniors out in style with a pair of dominating wins over TCU on Saturday at the WVU Natatorium … the women earned a 210-90 victory, their first dual meet win over a Big 12 foe since WVU joined the conference in 2012-13, while the men were equally as dominant, posting a 194-106 win for their fourth consecutive victory over the Horned Frogs … the women won 15 of 16 events and the men claimed 10 wins … the men finished 1-2-3 in five events and the women earned four 1-2-3 finishes ... three of the men’s five 1-2-3 finishes also saw the Mountaineers claim the top four places.
Notes: Senior Emma Skelley and freshman Morgan Bullock led the Mountaineers with three individual wins apiece, while juniors Amelie Currat and Michael Proietto and sophomores Julia Calcut, Merwane El Merini and Emma Harris each earned two individual wins ... Bullock, Currat, El Merini and Harris all added a win as part of relay teams … the divers were just as dominant as the swimmers, as Proietto and Calcut each won both events … Proietto led the men to a 1-2-3-4-5 finish on 1-meter (355.50) and 3-meter (351.05) with career-high scores on each board, while Calcut’s season-best 302.70 on 3-meter fueled a 1-2-3 finish for the Mountaineers to go along with a 1-2 finish on 1-meter.
Coach Vic Riggs on Saturday’s win over TCU: “I’m very proud of the teams’ total effort today. I think the biggest difference this week was we had very strong swims from top to bottom in almost every event. The energy on the deck was amazing before and during the meet and one of the most exciting meets we’ve had at home in a while. It has been several years since both teams won together in a dual meet and to have it on senior day makes it very special.”
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers will open the spring season on Saturday, Jan. 21, against Pitt at the Alpha Tennis & Fitness Club in Pittsburgh … WVU continues their swing through Pennsylvania in State College to take on Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 22.
Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers did not compete last week.
Notes: WVU enters the 35th edition of the Backyard Brawl with a 28-6 all-time lead on the Panthers in the series … In 2016 the Panthers were able to get the better of the Mountaineers, 6-1 … the Mountaineers will compete against the Nittany Lions for the first time since 2014, where WVU fell 6-1.
