MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – As the 2017 West Virginia University gymnastics season opener at the WVU Coliseum nears, the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced several exciting promotions for the Mountaineers’ home season.
“We have another great year of promotions set for our fans this season at the WVU Coliseum,” Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. “The more fans we have in the stands, the better we compete. We’re looking forward to showing off our talent this season.”
The Mountaineers (1-1) open their home season against No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA National Champion Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. It’s the first of two “Dollar Days”, as all tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each. Additionally, it’s also “Poster Day,” and the 2017 gymnastics schedule poster will be available for all fans to pick up. WVU students also are in for a treat, as the first 250 in attendance will receive a “Beat KU” t-shirt in anticipation of the WVU men’s basketball team’s Jan. 24 contest against the Jayhawks.
“I think our meet against OU Saturday is going to feature great competition and top-level gymnastics,” Butts added. “With it being a ‘Dollar Night,’ this is the perfect opportunity for families to come out and get their first look at this year’s WVU gymnastics team.”
WVU’s first quad-meet of the season against Denver, Temple and Towson on Jan. 29, at 2 p.m., also is “Teacher Appreciation Day.” WVU faculty and staff members, as well as all teachers at any level, will be admitted free with a valid employee ID. Fans who bring books and school supplies for a donation also will receive free admission. Also, the first 150 youth gymnasts inside the Coliseum that afternoon will receive a free WVU gymnastics t-shirt, and Mr. Twister will be in attendance to make balloon creations and offer face painting.
The Mountaineers will hold the fifth-annual Wendy M. Roach Invitational Pink Meet on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m., against Iowa State and Maryland. The Invitational, named after former WVU gymnast Nicole Roach’s mother, is a “Pink Meet” to promote breast cancer awareness. All fans are encouraged to wear pink that afternoon, and the team will accept sundry item donations, such as scarves, nail polish, books, body lotion and socks for donation to Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. Kids 13 years and younger also will be admitted free with a completed Musket Coloring Sheet.
WVU’s final home regular-season meet on Sunday, March 5, against Pitt, George Washington and Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m., is the second scheduled “Dollar Day.” It also is “Mountaineer Kids Club Day,” and all members are asked to dress as their favorite princess or superhero for a pre-meet parade. Activity stations, including an area to make posters, will be scattered throughout the WVU Coliseum concourse, and Mr. Twister will be in attendance. Additionally, the team’s three seniors – Brooklyn Doggette, Alexa Goldberg and Mackenzie Myers – will be honored following the competition.
The Mountaineers will be available to meet with fans and sign autographs at “Chalk Talk” after every home regular-season meet this year.
