Mountaineers to Hold Second Open Match
January 13, 2017 12:35 PM | Rifle
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rifle coach Jon Hammond announced today a format change for the No. 2-ranked Mountaineers’ January 22 match against No. 8 Nebraska.
The teams will shoot smallbore inside the WVU Rifle Range at 8 a.m. The match will then move to the indoor track inside the WVU Shell Building, and the air rifle relay will begin at 1 p.m. Following the match, the Mountaineers will be available to meet with fans and sign autographs.
This is the second time this season Hammond as adjusted the team’s traditional home-match routine, making the competition more fan-friendly and educational.
“We’re excited to have another great opportunity to shoot in a larger environment,” Hammond explained. “This match will replicate the championship venues we will see throughout the postseason. Additionally, I think these open matches are hugely beneficial for the sport of rifle. This allows us to show the sport on a bigger stage and provides our fans a better opportunity to watch the match and experience the sport. All around, it’s a win-win.”
Additionally, the 2017 GARC Championship dates have been confirmed. This year’s two-day match will be held Feb. 24-25, at the University of Akron.
