MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Members of the West Virginia University women’s basketball team helped distribute food to students and community members on Wednesday, as part of The Rack: WVU’s Food Bank for Students in a partnership with the Mountaineer Food Bank Fighting Hunger on WVU's Campus Mobile Food Pantry.
The Mountaineers and other volunteers distributed various items, including non-perishables, fruit and vegetables, and milk and juices. The mobile food bank was available from 11am until 2pm on Wednesday.
“This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to get involved with those within our community,” said coach Mike Carey. “We are always willing to help our neighbors and this was another way for us to give back to those who support us.”
The Rack: WVU’s Food Bank for Students was implemented in the fall of 2010. The goal of the program is to assist hungry and/or homeless students through the charitable efforts of the Greek community. The Greek houses hold canned food drives during events such as Homecoming and Greek Week to help stock the pantry. All overstock from the food drives is stored separately to ensure that the rack will always be an option for hungry students. For more information please visit:

Mountaineer Food Bank was created in 1981 and placed in Gassaway, West Virginia, in Braxton County due to its central location. Over the years, it has become the largest emergency food provider in West Virginia, distributing over 11 million pounds annually.
MFB provides food and other household items to over 440 feeding programs in 48 counties in West Virginia. These programs include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior programs and Backpack programs.
