Swanegan, Caffrey Claim Big 12 Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After leading the team to a 3-1 mark that included three straight sweeps, West Virginia University volleyball’s Mia Swanegan and Payton Caffrey have been honored by the Big 12 Conference. Swanegan was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, while Caffrey earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week accolades.
The honor is the first career conference weekly award for Swanegan and marks the second time this season that Caffrey has received rookie honors.
“These are very deserving accolades,” said WVU Coach Reed Sunahara. “I’m very proud of Payton and Mia. They both had a great weeks and helped us to some good wins. They’ve been leaders on the court for us this year.”
Swanegan led the league in blocking with a total of 20 on the week, averaging 1.54 per set. The junior middle blocker registered a team-best nine total blocks against Pacific on Monday, the most by a Big 12 player that week. She then combined for 11 blocks on the weekend, including five in a 3-0 win over Dartmouth, to help lead the Mountaineers to the WVU Invitational title.
