Caffrey Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After helping the West Virginia University volleyball team to three straight wins at the WVU Invitational, including the tournament title, freshman Payton Caffrey has been named the WVU student-athlete of the week, presented by University Apartments.
Caffrey averaged 4.38 kills per set to lead the Mountaineers to a 3-1 mark, including three straight sweeps and the WVU Invitational title, earning tournament MVP.
The freshman registered double-doubles against Pacific (14 kills, 10 digs), Winthrop (10 kills, 10 digs) and Akron (17 kills, 10 digs) to bring her total to a Big 12-best of seven this season. Caffrey also netted a team-high 16 kills in a 3-0 win over Dartmouth on Saturday.
She finished the weekend ranked second in the league in kills per set, eighth in service aces (0.31 per set) and second in points (4.88 per set). Caffrey hit .247 on the week, averaging 2.77 digs per set. Her .406 attacking percentage against Akron ranked eighth-best in the Big 12 this week, while her 17 kills against the Zips were second-most in a 3-set match.
This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 1 Mountaineers travel to Richmond for their nonconference finale, with kick from Robins Field on Friday, Sept. 23, set for 7:30 p.m.
Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU (7-1-1) went 1-1 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium over the weekend … the squad defeated Princeton, 3-0, on Friday, before losing 1-0 to No. 9 Georgetown on Sunday ... junior midfielder Alli Magaletta gave WVU the lead for good on Friday night, scoring in the 41st minute for her first goal in a WVU uniform … junior forward Michaela Abam added a score in the 52nd minute, and senior midfielder Ashley Lawrence added a penalty kick in the 58th minute … junior Michelle Newhouse made a career-high four saves for her first career shutout … WVU earned a 20-9 edge in shots and a 10-5 advantage in shots on-goal … the squad also earned a 5-2 edge in corner kicks … the team’s loss Sunday was its first of the season … GU’s Grace Damaska scored in the 102nd minute, halting WVU’s unbeaten streak at DDSS at 30 … sophomore Sh’Nia Gordon paced the field with five shots, three on-goal … freshman Rylee Foster made three saves, while WVU forced the Hoyas into eight stops.
Notes: Friday’s win had given WVU seven straight victories and pushed the team’s then-unbeaten streak at DDSS to 30, the 11th-best streak in NCAA history … the Mountaineers’ No. 1 ranking was its first in program history … WVU played in front of 1,946 fans Friday night, the fifth-best women’s soccer crowd in stadium history … senior midfielder Ashley Lawrence assisted on Magaletta’s game-winner for her first career point … Abam paces the team in points (11) and goals (5).
This Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia’s season-long five match homestand concludes on Tuesday, Sept. 20, against American at 7 p.m. ET … it will be Boy Scout Night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, and all troops will receive free admission … for fans unable to attend the match, a free live stream, courtesy of CityNet, and live stats can be found on WVUSports.com ... WVU wraps up the week at UNCG on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Last Week in Men’s Soccer: The Mountaineers (4-1-1) went 1-0-1 last week while extending their unbeaten streak to five matches … the week began with a 0-0 draw in double overtime to UMBC on Wednesday before a 3-0 win against George Mason on Saturday … freshman defender Albert Andres-Llop scored his first career goal in the sixth minute to put the Mountaineers ahead, 1-0, and WVU added to its lead with another quick strike to begin the second half, courtesy of senior forward Felix Angerer in the 50th minute … with just over two minutes remaining, junior midfielder Joey Piatczyc sealed the win with his first goal of the season … junior goalkeeper Jose Santos turned in his fifth consecutive shutout.
Notes: WVU extended its shutout streak to five matches and more than 525 minutes on Saturday … WVU is unbeaten in its last five matches, the best stretch since WVU won five in a row at the end of the 2014 season … on Saturday, freshmen Sebastian Garcia-Herreros and Lucca Barbaris and seniors Louis Thomas and Felix Angerer netted assists … it was Barbaris’ first career assist.
Coach Marlon LeBlanc following Saturday’s Win: “To be honest, we kept them in it in the first half, and we should have put that game away in the first half and had a few (goals). Jad Arslan had a great opportunity but the goalkeeper made a great save, Heath Honold had a great opportunity. In the locker room at 1-0 (at the half) is pretty disappointing, so for us to finally come out and score three goals and have chances to score more, it’s going to be good for us to finally hit the back of the net and build a little bit of confidence.”
This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers open Big 12 play with a pair of matches this week … the team will welcome No. 2 Texas to the WVU Coliseum on Tuesday … first serve is slated for 6 p.m … WVU travels to Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday for a 2 p.m. ET contest.

This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers have two weeks off before competing at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 1.

Notes: WVU alum Clara Santucci was the first female finisher in the Morgantown Marathon race on Sunday, September 18 ... on Sept. 13, redshirt junior Jillian Forsey was named the Big 12 Runner of the Week, after her victorious performance at the Texas Tech Open, to begin the 2016 season ... Forsey is the second Mountaineer in program history to achieve Big 12 Runner of the Week honors ... WVU alum Sarah Martinelli received the weekly honor in 2013.
This Week in Women’s Tennis: The Mountaineers travel to Little Rock, Arkansas, to compete in the Little Rock Classic from Sept. 23-25 … the Little Rock Classic will consist of Arkansas, West Virginia and Big 12 foes Kansas and TCU.
Last Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia competed at the William and Mary Tribe Invitational where the team won five singles and four doubles matches … sophomore Yvon Martinez led the way for the Mountaineer in singles play as she went 2-0 on the weekend … junior Lyn Yuen Choo went 2-1 at the Tribe Invitational … the pairs of Choo and Kaja Mrgole and Carolina Lewis and Martinez each went 1-0 on the weekend … the Mountaineers won two of three doubles matches against in-state rival Marshall on the second day of the event.
Notes: The Mountaineers will face four opponents and three doubles pairs that are ranked in the Oracle ITA rankings this weekend at the Little Rock Classic … Kansas’ Anastasia Rychagova is ranked No. 49, while Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia are ranked No. 56 in doubles … Arkansas’ Ana Oparenovic is ranked No. 60 … the Razorbacks’ Shannon Hudson and Ana Oparenovic are also ranked No. 49 in doubles … TCU had three competitors ranked as Donika Bashota was ranked No. 57, Seda Arantekin came in at No. 114 and Seda Arantekin and Caroline Wegner are the No. 18 doubles duo in the country.
This Week in Golf: The West Virginia University golf team heads to Virginia to compete in the VCU Janney Shootout at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond on Monday and Tuesday ... Alan Cooke, Max Sear, Etienne Papineau, Tristan Nicholls and Jon Ransone will represent the Mountaineers at the event, which is hosted by the VCU Rams ... seven members of the 15-team field rank inside Golfstat’s top-100: No. 84 ISU, No. 76 Maryland, No. 57 ECU, No. 82 Charlotte, No. 75 VCU, No. 66 JMU and No. 77 UNCG ... the Tuckahoe Creek Course at the C.C. of Virginia is a par-72 that runs 6,927 yards ... golfers will tee off in an 8:45 shotgun start for 36 holes on Monday before concluding with the final 18 holes on Tuesday ... West Virginia is paired with Charlotte and UNCG for the first day.
Last Week in Golf: West Virginia opened the season at The Invitational at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort in James Island, South Carolina … the Mountaineers finished tied for ninth place with a team score of 284-285-304=873 for nine over par … Max Sear led the squad with a T-19th finish, shooting a 216 to finish even par … freshman Etienne Papineau carded a 218 for two over and 33rd place in his collegiate debut.
Notes: The Mountaineer’s first-round score of 284 was its second lowest of the new era and their lowest in relation to par at four under par … senior Alan Cooke was in line for a runner-up finish but was disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard … Sear and Cooke both shot rounds in the 60s at Kiawah, at 69 and 67, respectively … Sear led the tournament field in par-3 scoring (2.83/-2) and was fourth with 16 birdies.
