September 01, 2016 03:17 PM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons and the Big 12 Conference announced the 2016-17 women’s basketball schedule on Thursday.
The Mountaineers will play 17 regular season home games, a nonconference contest in Charleston, West Virginia and an exhibition game at Robert C. Byrd High School in Clarksburg, West Virginia. There are eight teams on West Virginia’s schedule that reached the postseason last year, including seven that made the NCAA Tournament.
“We are excited about the upcoming season,” said coach Mike Carey. “Our nonconference schedule has a nice balance that will help us prepare for a tough Big 12 Conference slate. We look forward to the challenge ahead and we’re ready to get started.”
West Virginia tips off the season on Tuesday, Nov. 1, against Concord in an exhibition at Robert C. Byrd High School. Admission to the contest will be $5 for adults and $3 for children with all of the proceeds benefiting those affected by the flooding in southern West Virginia.
WVU opens the 2016-17 regular season against Charleston Southern on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Morgantown. The Mountaineers will play in one nonconference tournament, the Savannah Invitational, from Nov. 22-24 in Savannah, Georgia. WVU will face MEAC Tournament champion North Carolina A&T (Nov. 22), American Athletic Conference member East Carolina (Nov. 23) and NCAA Tournament participant Auburn (Nov. 24).
The Mountaineers will participate in their first SEC/Big 12 Challenge, when Ole Miss visits the Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 4. Returning to Charleston, the Mountaineers will play Longwood on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Mountaineers open their fifth season in the Big 12 on Thursday, Dec. 29 with a visit to TCU. West Virginia welcomes defending Big 12 champion Baylor to the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday, Jan. 4. The Mountaineers play host to NCAA Regional semifinalist Texas on Saturday, Jan. 14. Senior Day festivities are slated for Monday, Feb. 27, when the Kansas Jayhawks visit the Coliseum.
In 2015-16, West Virginia finished 25-10 overall and 12-6 in the Big 12 for a third place finish. The Mountaineers made an 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and reached the postseason for a 10th consecutive season.
League games will begin on Thursday, Dec. 29 and conclude on Monday, Feb. 27. The early start date allows each team to have a bye during conference play. The conference slate features a double round robin format for the sixth consecutive year consisting of 18 games with squads playing each other twice. The team(s) that finished with the highest winning percentage in league games will be crowned the Big 12 regular season champion.
Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Energy Arena serves as host of the 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship for the fifth time from March 3-6. The postseason event was also contested in Oklahoma City in 2016, 2014, 2009 and 2007. The women’s championship will remain in Oklahoma City through the 2019 campaign.
Game times and a complete television schedule will be announced at a later date. All dates and times are subject to change for television.
