MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Leading the squad in her collegiate debut for the West Virginia University volleyball team this weekend, Payton Caffrey has been named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week for the week of Aug. 29, as announced by the league on Monday.
Caffrey is the first Mountaineer to earn rookie of the week accolades since 2014.
The outside hitter from Chuluota, Florida, led WVU with 5.11 kills per set through three matches at the Penn State Classic in University Park, Pennsylvania, this weekend. Caffrey hit .287 and averaged 2.00 digs per set with six blocks, earning all-tournament team honors.
“She had a very good weekend for us,” said coach Reed Sunahara. “Payton is very deserving of this accolade. I look forward to seeing her develop this year.”
Caffrey tallied 18 kills and hit .400 in her career debut against No. 9 Penn State on Friday before registering a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs in the Mountaineers’ tilt with No. 19 North Carolina. She wrapped up her stellar weekend by hitting .250 with 11 kills and five blocks in leading West Virginia to a 3-0 sweep of Georgia Southern on Saturday evening.
