MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fans can catch their first glimpse of the 2016 West Virginia University volleyball team on Saturday, August 20, when the Mountaineers square off against each other in the annual Gold/Blue Scrimmage. Due to construction at the WVU Coliseum, the intrasquad scrimmage will be held at Morgantown High with a 4 p.m. ET start time.
Prior to the scrimmage, head coach Reed Sunahara and his squad will host a free clinic from noon to 2 p.m. The clinic is open to any and all entrants.
“We’re grateful Morgantown High could host us. I think the scrimmage will be a good gauge of what we’ve been able to accomplish so far and what we need to work on,” said Sunahara. “They worked really hard this spring and throughout this first week of preseason. It will be great to see everyone, especially our eight freshmen, in a WVU uniform. I hope it gets our fans excited for the season.”
The Mountaineers returned to the court on Monday as they prep for their second season under Sunahara. Senior middle blocker and Charleston native Hannah Shreve, who led WVU with 94 blocks on the season, will serve as a team captain in her final campaign. Junior libero Gianna Gotterba will also be a captain after leading the floor defense with 3.56 digs per set in 2015. Outside hitter Morgan Montgomery returns for her junior season after ranking third in the Big 12 with 3.74 kills per set as a sophomore.
Mia Swanegan earned her way into lineup at middle blocker after transferring from TCU in the spring of 2015, and will look to carry the solid play of her sophomore season (1.8 k/s, 0.73 b/s) into her junior year. Senior Haley Roe stepped in as the starting setter after spending her first two years as a defensive specialist, and will be joined in the senior class by defensive specialist MaTia Hughes. Eight newcomers will also fight for spots in the rotation.
West Virginia officially opens the 2016 season on Friday, Aug. 26, when they face No. 9 Penn State at the Penn State Classic in University Park, Pennsylvania.
