Over the next few months, WVUsports.com will visit with returning West Virginia University women’s basketball players to recap the previous season and preview the upcoming year. The first edition features sophomore guard Alexis Brewer from Buffalo, Kentucky.
Q: Alexis, describe your first year, and what are some of the things you learned during your freshman season?
A: It was kind of a struggle getting used to everything and adjusting. Overall it was a great first year. I really enjoyed it here. The biggest thing I learned was to just work hard and don’t dwell on your past mistakes and keep working and improving.
Q: What are some things you think you did well and other things you needed to improve upon?
A: I think I shot the ball really well my freshman year. I really improved on defense. I would say I need to improve on ball handling and of course my defense.
Q: Describe coach Carey’s defensive philosophy, and how did you adjust?
A: He likes to get up in you and make the other team run. Not many teams can run with us. He likes to get up the lane and create turnovers. At first, I didn’t really like it because I wasn’t good at it, but as the year progress I learned to like it.
Q: How did your family help you adjust to the college life during your freshman season?
A: Since my dad (James “Boo” Brewer) played college basketball, he knew how big of an adjustment it was. He told me the first year is your hardest year. If you get through it, you can get through the next three years. My brother Jordan was the same way. He played basketball 12 hours way. He encouraged me to work in the gym and improve my game every day.
Q: Since you have been at WVU for a year now, what do you like about the Mountaineer community?
A: I love it. The campus is beautiful and I really like the family atmosphere that WVU has here. It’s not just my coaches and teammates. It’s everyone from the fans to the community. It’s a great place to be.
Q: What are some of your goals as you enter your sophomore season?
A: I am looking forward to the season. We have bright future ahead of us. We’re going to have a great season. I am looking forward to bonding and getting to know my new teammates. As always, our goal is to win a Big 12 Championship.
