MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Volleyball's Hannah Shreve is West Virginia University’s nominee for the 2016 Big 12 Female Sportsperson of the Year as announced by the league on Tuesday.
A native of Charleston, West Virginia, Shreve recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Accounting in just three years, earning mention as a 2016 WVU Foundation Outstanding Senior. In addition, she carried the banner for the College of Business and Economics at commencement in May.
Shreve, a middle blocker, earned Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball team accolades in November and has been named to both the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll and Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She was also one of the winners of the Big 12’s Dr. Gerald Lage Award. Shreve will pursue a master’s degree while participating in her final season of eligibility for the volleyball team.
A member of WVU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Shreve has spent time volunteering with the Morgantown-based Hoss Foundation, which helps meet the needs of children and families facing hardships due to traumatic injury, illness or financial crisis. She is also active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year Awards began in 2000-01 to annually recognize student-athletes who displayed an extraordinary degree of sportsmanship and/or community service during the academic year. A male and female are honored each year.
In addition to Shreve, Cion Hicks (Baylor, track and field), Taylor Soucie (Kansas, volleyball), Kaylon Williams (Oklahoma, basketball) and Kierra Miles (Texas Tech, softball) have been nominated for 2015-16 Big 12 Female Sportsperson of the Year. Criteria for the award includes examples of sportsmanship and ethical conduct, citizenship within the campus and community as well as academic achievement. The male nominees will be featured on Wednesday, June 22 and the two winners named on Thursday, June 23.
