JUCO All-American Edwards Signs NLI
June 02, 2016 03:09 PM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey announced the signing of junior college All-American Aisha Edwards to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) for the 2016-17 season.
Edwards, a native of Boca Raton, Florida, originally signed with the University of Miami (FL). Edwards redshirted during the 2014-15 season due to a knee injury and then transferred to Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Florida.
Edwards averaged 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.3 assists per contest. Her 161 assists ranked 15th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), while her 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio was 35th. She tied for the team lead in points per contest. Edwards shot 43.5 percent from the field and 30.2 percent from behind the three-point line. She was named a second-team NJCAA All-American earlier this year. Edwards was named the No. 2 junior college freshman by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.
“She brings in experience at the point guard position and can play more than one position,” Carey said. “With the departure of Jessica Morton, we needed another person at that position. She comes in with a good situation.”
The 5-foot-8 guard reached double-figure scoring in 21 of 28 games. She tallied a game-high 32 points in Chipola’s 78-64 upset win over eventual NJCAA National Champion Gulf Coast State on Feb. 6. Edwards dished out 14 assists in a 69-55 win over Northwest Florida State on Jan. 12. Chipola finished 24-5 overall and 10-2 in the NJCAA Region 8 Panhandle Conference. The Lady Indian’s season ended with a 53-50 loss to Northwest Florida State in the FCSAA State Championship semifinals.
Coming out of West Boca Raton High, Edwards was ranked as the No. 54 player in the 2014 class by ESPN Hoop Gurlz. She was listed as the 10th best guard in the country and was tabbed a McDonald’s All-American nominee. She was named to the Sun Sentinel’s Fab Five in 2012. As a sophomore at Coral Springs Charter, she helped lead the school to its first-ever state tournament appearance. She was named first team All-County by the Sun Sentinel as a sophomore.
Edwards joins four others who signed their NLIs last fall to join the program next season: Kristina King (Mebane, N.C./Gulf Coast State), Krys McCune (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual), Nia Staples (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) and Bailey Thomas (Rochester Hills, Mich./Centennial (Nev.)).
