MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball coach Reed Sunahara announced the addition of Zuri Smith to the squad on Monday. Smith will transfer to WVU after spending the 2015 season at Colorado.
A 6-foot-5 outside hitter, Smith did not see action in her first collegiate season with the Buffs. She spent two seasons at Sumter High in Sumter, South Carolina, where she was the MVP in both 2013 and 2014. Smith hit .381 with 208 kills as a senior, adding 82 blocks and 51 service aces as she earned all-state honors. She tallied 183 kills with 60 blocks as a junior in 2013.
"Zuri is a great addition to our team. Her physicality and athleticism are traits we are looking for to continue to build our program,” said Sunahara, who enters his second season at the helm. “Zuri is a versatile player that will help us create multiple options offensively and defensively. She has four years to make a huge impact on this program.”
Smith, who also was a member of Sumter’s basketball team, is the daughter of former NFL player Herman Smith and Arteresa Smith-Hairston. She was recruited by Washington State, Georgia State, UNLV, Colorado State, Illinois, UCLA and USC out of high school and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
