The Mountaineers’ novice four crew advanced to tomorrow’s Grand Final with a pair of runner-up finishes, while WVU’s first and second varsity eight boats earned semifinal appearances on Mercer Lake before competition was suspended due to weather.
“I’m pleased with how all of our crews handled today’s conditions,” said coach Jimmy King. “The deteriorating weather did not distract them from focusing on their races. This is particularly true of our novice four who advanced to the Grand Final shortly before racing was suspended for the day.”
In the Women’s Frosh/Novice Four heat, the Mountaineers’ first boat crossed the line in second place in 9:02.55. Next in the semifinals, Nicole Bender, Kara Ehrenberger, Amanda Garn, Madison Stepp and coxswain Kaitlin Sullivan earned a spot in the Grand Final. The crew finished in second again with a time of 8:45.74.
“I’m very proud of how the first novice four competed today,” said novice coach Amanda Merritt. “They put together two really good races in less than ideal conditions to earn a spot in the Grand Final tomorrow. I’m looking forward to see how they will battle it out with the regatta’s top novice crew’s tomorrow morning.”
The first novice four crew will compete in the Grand Final tomorrow against Massachusetts, Holy Cross, Boston College, Lafayette, Pittsburgh and Temple. The Women’s Frosh/Novice Four Grand Final is set to begin at 11:43 a.m.
West Virginia’s first and second varsity eight boats also advanced to the semifinals for a chance to compete in the grand final, but due to the extreme cold and rainy conditions, the semifinals were suspended until tomorrow.
In the Women’s Varsity Eight event, West Virginia recorded a time of 7:45.90 to place third in its heat. The second varsity eight boat posted a time of 7:45.63 to place fourth in its heat.
The second varsity eight crew will compete against Kansas, Alabama, Connecticut, North Carolina and Delaware for a chance to advance to the finals. The first varsity eight boat will race against Miami, Kansas, Drexel, Wisconsin’s lightweight crew, Fordham and SMU in the semifinals. Competition begins at 8:06 a.m. for the second varsity eight crew, while the first varsity eight race is scheduled to begin at 8:18 a.m.
The varsity four boats started the day off for the Mountaineers, as the first varsity four (8:32.80) and the second varsity four (8:47.18) placed fifth within their respective heats. Additionally, the second novice four boat placed sixth in its heat with a 10:23.22 in the Frosh/Novice Four B event.
