MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two from the West Virginia University rifle team will compete at the 2016 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championship (NJOSC), which opens on April 9 with the men’s rifle events, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Freshman Will Anti will compete in the men’s events, and sophomore Elizabeth Gratz will shoot in the women’s events, which begin on April 15.
The top-two athletes in each event earn a spot on the USA Shooting’s National Junior Team for 2016.
“There are a lot of benefits to shooting at the Junior Olympic Championships,” Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. “This is one of the premier national junior competitions, and it offers the athletes an opportunity to qualify for the National Junior Team. Will and Elizabeth both have the chance to test themselves against the best competition in the country.”
A native of Fort Benning, Georgia, Anti is the defending Junior Olympic air rifle champion.
Top contributors for the Mountaineers throughout their run to their fourth straight NCAA title this season, Anti averaged 578.9 in smallbore and 587 in air rifle, while Gratz, a native of Sigel, Illinois, posted season averages of 579.2 in smallbore and 591.4 in air rifle.
The men’s air rifle competition will run April 9-10, with the men’s 3-position and prone competitions following April 11-13.
The women’s 3-positions competition will run April 16-17, with the women’s air rifle event following April 18-19.
