West Virginia Competes at EAWRC Sprints

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team finishes the 2016 regular season at the EAWRC Sprints on Sunday, May 1, in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Competition from Lake Quinsigamond begins at 8 a.m. ET, with Sunday’s race consisting of heats in the morning and finals in the afternoon.
“This is the last weekend of racing prior to the conference championship for most schools, so everyone is striving to round into form now,” said coach Jimmy King. “Six different conferences will compete this weekend – the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Colonial, Ivy and Patriot. With conference seeding coming into play, I expect racing in the heats to be highly contested as well as in the finals.”
The Mountaineers have crews competing in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four events. The first West Virginia boat is set to race in the varsity eight at 8:20 a.m. ET against Harvard, Boston, Rutgers and Holy Cross.
Most recently, West Virginia won six races against Pitt, Duquesne and Mercyhurst on April 23, in Pittsburgh, on the Allegheny River. The Mountaineers swept the first and second varsity eight events en route to six wins and one runner-up finish in 10 events against the Panthers, Dukes and Lakers on the 2,000-meter couse.
“Our team raced fairy well last weekend, putting together more complete races,” King noted. “The eight raced well in both outings, while the four raced much better in their second time out. We want to see all of our crew’s race well the first time down the course this weekend.”
This weekend’s competition will be the fifth event of the spring for West Virginia.
