MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team wrapped up a successful spring campaign of practice, strength and conditioning workouts and several matches last week in Morgantown.
“We concluded on spring season last Friday,” said coach Reed Sunahara, who enters his second season at the helm of the Mountaineers. “We got in about six weeks of practice and strength and conditioning. During that time, I thought our players were focused and bought into the things we were trying to accomplish and worked hard to the goals that they set.
“Our goal was to work on technique and skills,” said Sunahara. “I felt that they were cognizant of what we were trying to teach and they applied it to our spring matches.”
The Mountaineers played seven spring matches throughout March and April. They started the season off with a trip to Charlottesville, Virginia, where they played Virginia and Georgetown (March 19). WVU then traveled to Kent, Ohio, to take on Kent State, Robert Morris and Duquesne (April 2). The squad also played at Duquesne (April 8) and Gannon (April 15).
Outside hitter Morgan Montgomery led the offense with 131 kills on 357 attempts, while middle blocker Mia Swanegan hit 0.381 with 52 kills. Hannah Shreve totaled 39 kills and five blocks, while newcomer Natania Levak had 42 kills and eight blocks. Libero Gianna Gotterba led the floor defense with 119 digs, followed by Taylor Cross with 71. Haley Roe and newcomer Erin Slinde split time at setter.
“Their determination and work ethic to get better every day showed promising results as we progressed during our spring training,” said Sunahara. “The spring established a good foundation for the upcoming season. It allowed our players to find their strength and also what they need to improve upon.”
