MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rifle sophomore Elizabeth Gratz earned two medals at the 2016 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championship (JNOSC), April 15-19, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The Sigel, Illinois, native finished third in the women’s 50m 3 positions on April 17 and second in the women’s 10m air rifle on April 19. She was the only competitor to medal in both events, and the air rifle finish moved her back to the National Junior Team.
“I think Elizabeth had a great week in Colorado,” WVU coach Jon Hammond said. “It was a great accomplishment to be the only shooter to medal in both events. There were a lot of positives from the week. Most importantly, she really enjoyed the competition and had a good mindset for both events, and that allowed her to have two good performances. She will have a lot to work off and build on for next year.”
Gratz finished the two-day 3 positions competition with a 1168 mark, shooting 587 on day one and 581 on day two. She placed fourth in the final with a 432.9 mark, earning five additional points and pushing her third-place total to 1174.
Gratz opened the air rifle competition with a 414.0 mark on day one and followed with a 413.3 score on day two, giving her a total of 827.3. A score of 206.2 in the final was good enough for second place and seven additional points. Gratz earned the Silver medal with a 834.3 total.
