MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell to No. 45 Baylor by a score of 4-0, today, at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, in Waco, Texas.
“Score wise, it was a tough day on the courts,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “Baylor played well. However, there is progress that we can take away from this weekend and apply it to our upcoming week of work in order to prepare for TCU and Texas Tech. We are focusing on playing our best tennis when we go into the conference tournament. We will take lessons from the matches this weekend, and we will work on being better prepared.”
The Mountaineers (6-12, 0-7) fell behind 1-0, as they dropped back-to-back matches at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions. The contest between the duo of sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo and freshman Paula Goetz and the Bears’ Rhiann Newborn and Karina Traxler was abandoned 4-1 once the team-point was clinched at the conclusion of the No. 1 doubles match.
In singles, West Virginia’s deficit grew after sophomore Yvon Martinez fell to BU’s Elizabeth Profit in straight sets on court six (6-1, 6-3). At the No. 5 singles slot, junior Kaja Mrgole also dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to BU’s Kelley Anderson in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
The match-clinching point came at the No. 2 position, where Goetz stumbled against BU’s Kiah Generette (6-1, 6-1). Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were halted after the fourth match point was won.
The Mountaineers return home to host their final pair of Big 12 matches this season. West Virginia welcomes TCU on Friday, April 22, followed by Texas Tech on Sunday, April 24. Friday’s contest is set to begin at 4 p.m., while Sunday’s match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Sunday’s match is Senior Day, as the Mountaineers will honor their lone senior Hailey Barrett.
