April 15, 2016 04:55 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team travels to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to compete at the Bison Outdoor Classic on April 16-17, hosted by Bucknell.
The Mountaineers will compete at Bucknell for the first time ever on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday’s events will begin at 10 a.m. ET, starting with the long jump, and Sunday’s competition start at 11 a.m. ET, with pole vault at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Both days of competition are predicted to be sunny and temperatures in the low 70’s.
“This will be a great opportunity for the entire team,” said coach Sean Cleary. “The competition is very good, but more so the weather looks to cooperate. We have been looking forward to a weekend with the potential weather we are getting all season.”
Bucknell will host athletes from 89 teams in addition to West Virginia. Schools from NCAA Division I, II and III and Canada, along with track clubs will participate at the event.
Last weekend, the Mountaineers competed strong at the Mason Spring Invitational in Fairfax, Virginia. Competition was highlighted by WVU’s six top-five finishes and by senior Tori Bertrand’s victory in the pole vault. Bertrand recorded a career-best mark of 3.91 meters, the third best on WVU’s top five outdoor performance list.
As the teams battled cold temperatures and high winds yet again, West Virginia placed ninth overall out of 15 teams, scoring 42 points. Dartmouth won with 119.5 points, followed by Bucknell in second (109.75). WVU finished just 1.75 points shy of a top-six finish and 10.5 points away from a place in the top five.
Looking forward, the Mountaineers will compete at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Friday, April 22.
