Three to Compete at ISSF Rio World Cup
April 15, 2016 09:11 AM | Rifle
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three from the West Virginia University rifle team will compete at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Rio de Janeiro World Cup, April 16-24, at the Olympic Shooting Centre, located inside Deodoro Park, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Freshman Ginny Thrasher, a recent Olympic qualifier, and senior Garrett Spurgeon will represent the United States, while senior Meelis Kiisk will shoot for Estonia.
The second ISSF World Cup stage of the 2016 season, this week’s competition also will serve as a test event for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
“Competing at any World Cup is a great experience, but this World Cup is a little more special given that it is the test event for the Rio Olympics,” WVU coach Jon Hammond said. “These shooters will be on the same range and the same setup as the Olympians.
“For Ginny, this is a very important preparation match, as she already knows she’ll be competing at the Olympics in August. This week will give her a great opportunity to shoot smallbore and air rifle on the different ranges and gain insight that will help her at the Games.”
Competition opens Saturday with the women’s 10m air rifle event. The men’s 10m air rifle will follow on April 18, and the men’s 50m rifle prone competition will be held on April 21. The women’s 50m rifle 3 positions competition is set for April 22, and the World Cup will conclude with the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event on April 24.
Most recently, Thrasher won the women’s 50m 3 position competition at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore on April 4, securing a roster spot for the Olympic Games.
A complete recap of the ISSF Rio de Janeiro World Cup will be available HERE following the conclusion of competition.
