MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rifle freshman Will Anti shot in two finals and finished third in the men’s 10m air rifle at the 2016 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championship (NJOSC), April 9-13, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The Fort Benning, Georgia, native opened the week-long competition on April 10 with his third place, 1239.4 air rifle score. He followed that performance with a seventh-place finish in the men’s 50m 3 positions on April 13, earning a 2312 total. Anti also placed 21st in the men’s 50m prone on April 13, shooting a two-day total of 1224.9.
“The Junior Olympic Championship was another good experience for Will,” Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. “It was especially good to see him qualify for two finals, as that experience will help him down the road. While the outcomes weren’t exactly what he wanted, there are positives and lessons to be learned from the experience, and those lessons will help him become a better shooter down the line.”
Anti finished with a two-day air rifle score of 1235.4, shooting 619.2 on day one and 616.2 on day two. He placed fifth in the final with a 139.2 mark to earn four extra points, pushing him to his final 1239.4 showing.
Daily scores of 1155 and 1156 helped Anti qualify for the 3 position final, where he earned one additional point with an eighth place, 393.0 mark.
In prone, Anti shot 613.2 on the first day of competition and 611.5 on the second day.
The women’s championships is on deck, with sophomore Elizabeth Gratz slated to represent the Mountaineers. The women’s 3-positions competition will run on April 16-17, and the air rifle event will follow on April 18-19.
