INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - West Virginia University guard Bria Holmes was named a Senior CLASS Award Second Team All-American on Friday.
Holmes, a finalist for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award, was one of 10 named to the All-America team. She is the second Mountaineer to earn the recognition, joining Liz Repella who was a Senior CLASS Award All-America Second Team honoree in 2011.
Connecticut’s Breanna Stewart was tabbed the Senior CLASS Award winner. Joining Stewart on the 2015-16 first team is Oregon State’s Ruth Hamblin, UConn’s Moriah Jefferson, Army’s Kelsey Minato and South Carolina’s Tiffany Mitchell. In addition to Holmes, Oregon’s Jillian Alleyne, Florida State’s Adut Bulgak, Arkansas State’s Andrea Gamble and George Washington’s Jonquel Jones were tabbed second team All-Americans.
The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I women’s basketball coaches, national basketball media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I women’s basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Holmes finished third on West Virginia’s all-time scoring ledger with 2,001 points and ranks in the top 10 in 14 different career statistical categories at WVU. Holmes was named unanimous All-Big 12 First Team for a third consecutive year this season and was named Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention earlier this week.
Additionally, Holmes was a WBCA All-America Honorable Mention in 2015. Last summer, she participated in the USA Basketball Pan American and World University Games Team Trials. The WVU NAACP Chapter named Holmes the NAACP Female Athlete of the Year last season.
Holmes has participated in several community service events during her four years at West Virginia University. She has helped with the Shopping for Angels program, which gives kids an opportunity to buy essential items such as clothes and shoes during the holiday season. Holmes has visited the West Virginia University Children’s Hospital on multiple occasions to help put smiles on many young Mountaineer faces. She and her teammates have regularly practiced and coached at Stepping Stones, an organization for disabled individuals. Holmes also has helped raise awareness for breast cancer and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at WVU.
A criminology major, Holmes is a three-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll member and Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll recipient. Holmes is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and is expected to graduate in May.
