MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey will be honored as a 2016 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Victory Club Award recipient later this week at the WBCA National Convention in Indianapolis.
Carey, who has coached 15 seasons at WVU, reached the 300-win mark with a 68-50 victory over Grand Canyon on Nov. 24, 2015.
The Clarksburg, West Virginia native, has tallied other coaching milestones this season. On Dec. 2, Carey became the program’s all-time wins leader with his 302nd victory against Morehead State and then he registered his 600th career victory with a 72-35 win over Kansas on Jan. 16. Carey collected 288 victories in 13 seasons as the men’s coach at Salem International and has won 321 games at WVU.
West Virginia made its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance under Carey this season and has reached the postseason in 12 of his 15 seasons.
The WBCA Victory Club Award is presented annually to each WBCA-member head coach who achieves career wins of 200, 300, 400, 500 or more, in 100-victory increments, during the current season.
