MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Andrew Marsh of the West Virginia University swimming team capped his career as a Mountaineer in the 100 freestyle at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia.
Swimming in his third event in his second-consecutive NCAA Championships appearance, Marsh placed 39th in the 100 freestyle. He touched the wall in 43.64 to beat Minnesota’s swimmer by .02 seconds.
“Andrew had a good week,” said coach Vic Riggs. “I know he wanted to do better, but he's a two-time NCAA qualifier, and he did a great job this season. He has a lot to be proud of, and he represented the Flying WV very well.”
On Thursday, March 24, Marsh competed in the 50 freestyle, his first event of the weekend, where he placed 45th with a time of 20.18. His second event of the weekend came in the 100 backstroke, where he placed 17th overall with a time of 46.15, just .05 seconds shy of a top-16 finish and a spot in the finals.
The Bemus Point, New York, native, capped his career as a Mountaineer today at the NCAA Championships. From a Big 12 Championship to Olympic Trial qualifying times and multiple school records, it was a season for the record books for Marsh.
He earned an Olympic Trial qualifying time of 50.50 in the 100-meter freestyle at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals in Federal Way, Washington, on December 3-5. Additionally, Marsh won a Big 12 title in the men’s 100 backstroke at the 2016 Big 12 Championship, setting a Big 12 record and school record with a time of 45.41. Marsh added a school record in the 100 butterfly.
