MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshman gymnast Kirah Koshinski was named a regular-season All-America for vault, as announced today by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W).
The honor, first awarded in 2013, is the first for a WVU gymnast. Koshinski, a native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, was named to the second team based on her 9.9 regular-season regional qualifying score (RQS). First team All-Americans are the top-eight ranked gymnasts, while second team All-Americans are those ranked Nos. 9-16. Koshinski ranks No. 12 on vault in the final Road to Nationals Rankings.
Koshinski is the sixth WVU gymnast to earn All-America honors and the first under fifth-year coach Jason Butts. Janáe Cox was the last Mountaineer to earn an All-America award, as she was named to the floor first team following the 2007 NCAA National Championships.
“We knew Kirah had tremendous potential, and I am so happy to see her hard work and consistency pay off with such a prestigious award,” Butts said. “To receive this All-America honor as a freshman shows just how bright Kirah’s future is. I look forward to watching her the rest of this season and seeing just how high she can climb in the next three seasons.”
The 2016 Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year, Koshinski, the five-time conference weekly honoree, too, finished third on vault at the conference championship on March 19 with a 9.9 score, the second-best mark awarded. She has scored 9.85 or better on vault in 11 of the 12 meets this year and hit a career-high 9.925 twice. Koshinski also has earned six vault wins. She was named to the All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team for vault and to the All-Big 12 Championship Team.
Koshinski also paces the Mountaineers on floor and ranks No. 58 nationally with a 9.875 RQS. In total, she has earned nine event victories this season and has scored 9.8 or better in all but eight career routines.
Koshinski and the Mountaineers compete at the 2016 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Championships on Saturday, April 2, at 5 p.m. EST, inside Coleman Coliseum.
