MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team completed the Wake Forest Open on Saturday, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at the Kentner Stadium.
The final day of the event was highlighted by West Virginia’s four top-five finishes: one in the pole vault invitational, two in the pole vault B section and one in the 400 meter hurdles.
“I was pleased with a number of performances today,” said coach Sean Cleary. “The weather was not conducive for almost the entire day, yet we did not let the cold rain impact the results. If we keep our heads on straight in brutal conditions, we will be positioned well for great track weather.”
Sophomore Madelin Gardner placed second in the pole vault invitational, leaping 3.77 meters. Sara Finfrock placed seventh in the event with a mark of 3.47 meters.
The Mountaineers took two top-four finishes in the pole vault B section thanks to sophomore Rebekah Lafata and freshman Jordan Hess. Lafata (3.32) and Hess (3.72) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault B section.
“I was happy with two of the sprinters performances,” said assistant coach Erin O’Reilly. (Chaqieta) Robinson was near a personal record in the 400 meter hurdles, and she was in her first ever collegiate 400mH today.”
Freshman Chaqieta Robinson posted a top-five finish in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing in fifth with a time of 1:06.35.
Senior Hannah Stone placed 12th in the 200 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 26.14. Junior Bria Welker finished 20th with a time of 26.66.
Sophomore Corinne Kule placed seventh in the 3,000 meters and finished with a time of 10:16.78, while sophomore Allie Diehl placed 19th with a time of 10:49.34.
The Mountaineers will continue the outdoor season as the team splits to compete at the Texas Relays from March 30 - April 2, in Austin, Texas, as well as the Stanford Invitational on April 1, in Stanford, California.
