Seven Named Academic All-Big 12

FRISCO, Texas – A conference-best seven West Virginia University gymnasts were named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team, the league office announced today.
The Mountaineers placed a program-best seven gymnasts for the third straight season.
Four gymnasts were named to the first team, including seniors Melissa Idell (elementary education) and Jaida Lawrence (speech pathology & audiology), both three-time honorees. Sophomores Robyn Bernard (exercise physiology) and Jordan Gillette (exercise physiology) also were named to the first team, their first career awards.
Junior Alexa Goldberg (athletic coaching education) and sophomores Amanda Bowman (social work) and Zaakira Muhammad (general studies) all landed on the second team, the first career honors for the three gymnasts.
In total, 26 gymnasts earned recognitions. Iowa State also tallied seven overall selections, while No. 1 Oklahoma had six first-team selections.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation also are eligible.
