WVU Signee Named JUCO National Player of the Year

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s basketball signee Kristina King of Gulf Coast State College was named the 2016 WBCA Junior/Community College Player of the Year and All-American, as announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Tuesday.
King, a 6-foot-3 sophomore forward, helped the Lady Commodores capture the 2016 Region VIII State Championship against Northwest Florida State College, scoring a game-high 24 points. The Commodores advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament with the win. Gulf Coast is 28-1 on the season and went 11-1 in conference play.
King has started all 29 games this season so far, leading the Lady Commodores with 18.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. She has also averaged 2.1 steals, 1.6 blocks and 1.4 assists per game in her sophomore campaign. King signed her National Letter of Intent (NLI) with WVU in November 2015.
During her two seasons as a member of the Lady Commodores, King has accumulated many awards and recognitions. She was named the 2016 Panhandle Conference Player of the Year and was selected to the Panhandle All-Conference Team for the second time. She was voted to the FCSAA/NJCAA Region VIII All-Tournament Team and the WBCA Junior/Community College Coaches’ All-American Team as a freshman.
King was ranked as the nation’s top junior college player by Dan Olson of the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. She will join the Mountaineer women’s basketball program for the 2016-17 season.
