MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s divers finished 2-3-4 in both events as the men and women’s diving teams concluded the regular season at the JMU Diving Invitational on Saturday, in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
The Mountaineers placed second, third and fourth in both the men’s 1- and 3-meter springboard, with runner-up finishes from sophomores Michael Proietto and Alex Obendorf. Senior Lindsay Schmidt led the way for the WVU women with a third-place finish on 3-meter and a fifth-place showing on 1-meter.
“Today was a very good meet all around,” WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. “The men really capitalized on the opportunity to compete against a strong team in our zone and finished 2-3-4 in both events. For the women, Lindsay was consistent and competitive on both boards. The other girls, as freshmen, are still figuring it out and learning how to compete at this level. I’m pleased with all of the divers and looking forward to training the next two weeks in preparation for the Big 12 Championship. We just need to stay focused and healthy.”
Proietto, Obendorf and sophomore Logan McHenry notched top-four finishes for the men on both boards. Proietto led WVU on 1-meter with a 304.70 to place second, while Obendorf was second on 3-meter with a 318.15. Proietto was third on 3-meter with a 300.75 and McHenry was fourth with a 298.60. Behind Proietto on 1-meter, Obendorf posted a 304.70 to finish third while McHenry was fourth with a 300.90.
For the Mountaineer women, Schmidt led the way with a 275.95 on 3-meter to finish third. She was joined in the top 15 by freshman Julia Calcut, who earned a 244.50 and freshman Mary Smith with a 224.75 to finish 14th. On the 1-meter board, Schmidt’s 255.80 was good for fifth. Calcut again finished ninth, with a 239.20 and freshman Averly Hobbs notched a 236.85 for a 10th-place finish. Smith also added a 216.35 to place 18th on 1-meter.
Also for the WVU men, freshmen Emmott Blitch (264.40) and Austin Smith (263.65) placed eighth and ninth, respectively, on 1-meter. Smith was eighth on 3-meter with a 250.25 and Blitch was ninth with a 247.55.
The JMU Diving Invitational marked the end of the regular season for the Mountaineers. Postseason competition begins at the Big 12 Championship in Austin, Texas, Feb. 24-27.
