Mountaineers Complete First Day of Big 12s

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team completed the first day of the 2016 Big 12 Indoor Championship, on Friday, inside the Lied Recreation Center, in Ames, Iowa.
Texas Tech leads after the first day of competition with 43 points, while Texas sits in second with 41 points. Kansas State sits in third with 29, Kansas in fourth with 28.5, Iowa State in fifth with 28, Oklahoma in sixth with 22.5, Oklahoma State in seventh with 22, Baylor in eighth with 17, West Virginia in ninth with two points and TCU in 10th with one point.
Sophomore Meghan Jean-Baptiste started off competition, as she competed in the pentathlon – 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meters. Baptiste scored a total of 3,264 in the five-event pentathlon.
Baptiste’s first event was the 60-meter hurdles, where she leaped a season-best time of 8.81 to place sixth. In the second event, she placed eighth in the high jump with a mark of 1.60 meters. Baptiste participated in the third event, where she finished 13th with 7.43 meters in shot put. She placed 11th in the long jump, jumping 5.35 meters. In the final 800-meter event, Baptiste finished in 11th with a time of 2:41.28.
In the pole vault finals, sophomore Madelin Gardner placed ninth with a mark of 3.83 meters. Senior Tori Bertrand finished 10th with a mark of 3.83 meters.
The one mile preliminary rounds saw junior Amy Cashin advance to the finals, after finishing in second place with a time of 4:53.49. The final is set to begin at 4:10 p.m. tomorrow.
In her first competition this season, sophomore Jillian Forsey place seventh in the 5,000 meters final, crossing the finish line in 16:34.53. Sophomore Maggie Drazba also competed in the event, placing 12th with a time of 16:43.29.
Rebecca Wendt raced in the 1,000 meters prelims and placed eighth with a time of 2:53.69 to advance her to the finals tomorrow at 4:20 p.m.
In the long jump final, freshman Danique Bryan placed 11th overall with a mark of 5.60 meters
The Mountaineers resume the final day of the Big 12 Championship tomorrow, Feb. 27, starting with the multi events at noon inside the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa.
