The Mountaineers (21-8, 10-6 Big 12) picked up a come-from-behind 83-72 victory over TCU on Wednesday. West Virginia trailed by 13 with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter. Behind a 30-point effort from Holmes, WVU used a 32-8 run in the final 13 minutes to pick up the victory.
Statistically, the Mountaineers are averaging 69.9 points and holding opponents to 57.4 points per game. WVU is shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 30.4 percent from behind the arc. WVU’s 34.7 field goal percentage defense is third in the Big 12 and 14th nationally. The Mountaineers lead the Big 12 with 6.4 blocks per game.
Holmes, a Senior CLASS Award finalist, paces the Mountaineers with 16.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. The New Haven, Connecticut, native is 104 points away from reaching 2,000 and is the Big 12’s active career scoring leader with 1,896 points. Holmes, who is third at WVU in all-time scoring, is 16 points shy of becoming the first Mountaineer to score 500 or more points in three consecutive seasons.
Center Lanay Montgomery continues to lead the Mountaineers with 8.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per contest. Montgomery’s 61.5 field goal percentage is third in the league and is on pace the set the program’s single-season record.
In two seasons, Morton has produced 309 points, 100 points and 57 assists in 50 games as a Mountaineer after transferring from Gulf Coast State. Roberson, a native of San Antonio, Texas, has tallied 216 rebounds, 132 points, 48 steals and 31 blocks this season. Roberson transferred to WVU after graduating from Colorado last May.
The Cowgirls (20-7, 10-6 Big 12) and Mountaineers are currently tied for third place in the Big 12. WVU and Oklahoma State meet for the 10th time on Saturday. OSU held WVU to a season-low 14 points in the first-half en route to a 63-51 win over the Mountaineers on Feb. 13 in Stillwater. Kaylee Jensen scored 18 points in the win, while Tynice Martin led WVU with 13.
“We felt like they physically manhandled us and we were never in the game,” coach Mike Carey said about his team’s performance at Oklahoma State earlier this season. “We had a lot of people in foul trouble, we didn’t hit our shots and we weren’t physical. I think we have a lot to prove here on Saturday.”
OSU is second in the league with 42.5 rebounds and 17.3 assists per contests. Senior Brittney Martin paces the Big 12 with 21.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Jensen is second on the team with 15.7 points per game. Roddrick Patton is the nation’s number two assists leader, dishing out 7.5 assists per game.
A victory on Saturday would mark the second time this season the Mountaineers have defeated an Associated Press Top 25 team. WVU defeated No. 20 Oklahoma, 63-55, on Feb. 17. The Mountaineers have knocked off at least two AP Top 25 ranked teams the last six seasons.
Following Saturday’s game, West Virginia will finish the regular season at Iowa State on Tuesday, March 1. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT in Ames.
