Mountaineers Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Twenty-four West Virginia University swimming and diving student-athletes were named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Team, announced today.
Among the 102 Big 12 student-athletes honored, sophomore Amelie Currat was one of two from all teams to be recognized for a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Eleven honorees from the Mountaineer women were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team: Madeline Bolin, Mackenzie Braden, Currat, Morgan Emter, Kelsey Frantz, Jaimee Gillmore, Celia Martinez De La Torre, Katie Murto, Lindsay Schmidt, Emma Skelley and Loren Williams.
On the WVU men’s squad, Aidan Fumagali, Ross Glegg, Nathan Howells, Jake Iotte, James Koval, Andrew Marsh, Joe Miller and Max Spencer received first team honors.
Second team honorees from the women’s team includes Mia Fiorenzi and Emma Luigard, while Frank Csonka, Austin Green and AnDrew Riebel were named to the second team from the men’s team.
West Virginia’s 24 honorees is tied for second-most among all Big 12 teams.
First Team honorees are student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or higher, while second team members hold a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Mountaineers begin the first day of competition at the 2016 Big 12 Championship tomorrow, Feb. 24, in Austin, Texas. The championship continues through Feb. 27.
