MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University senior Bria Holmes garnered Academic All-Big 12 Women’s Basketball Second Team honors, as announced by the league office on Thursday.
Holmes, a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, picked up her third career Academic All-Big 12 accolade. Last season, she earned first team honors and in 2014 was tabbed to the second team. Since her arrival at WVU, Holmes has also appeared on the Big 12 Commissioner’s and Garrett Ford Academic Honor Rolls. The New Haven, Connecticut, native, who leads the team with 16.6 points per game, is expected to graduate with a degree in Criminology this May. Since arriving in the Big 12 Conference, West Virginia has produced 16 women’s basketball student-athletes on the first and second Academic All-Big 12 teams.
The first team totaled 39 selections, while 11 honorees make up the second team. Oklahoma and Texas paced all institutions with nine members each. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
West Virginia returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 21, in a 1 p.m. contest at No. 8/7 Texas. The game is televised locally on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh and regionally on FOX Sports Net.
