Strong play from their veterans helped the Mountaineers (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) pick up a 57-47 win over Iowa State on Wednesday. Bria Holmes netted 23 points, while Lanay Montgomery registered her sixth double-double of the year with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Arielle Roberson had a team-leading 17 rebounds, as WVU picked up its 10th home victory.
West Virginia and Oklahoma State meet for the first time this season. The two squads won at the opposition’s home floor last season. WVU owns a 5-3 edge in the series and is 3-1 in Stillwater. West Virginia’s last Top 25 road victory came with a 61-49 win at No. 21 OSU on Jan. 17, 2015.
Oklahoma State’s six-game win streak was halted with a 70-55 loss at No. 6 Texas on Wednesday. The Cowgirls are 18-5 overall and 8-4 in Big 12 play. Both teams are currently tied for third, one game ahead of fourth place Oklahoma.
OSU is averaging 68.4 points per game and holding opponents to 56.4 points per contest. The Cowgirls are second in the league and 15th nationally with 17.3 assists per game. OSU is fourth in the Big 12 and 13th nationally with a 34.4 field goal percentage defense. Brittney Martin leads the Big 12 and the Cowgirls with 21.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per contest. Guard Roddricka Patton ranks second nationally behind Baylor’s Niya Johnson with 17.1 assists per game.
“It’s a big challenge,” coach Mike Carey said. “They’re pretty good. I can see why they’ve won a lot of games. They have two big post players that are playing really well, a quick point guard and they have a future pro player in Brittney Martin.”
WVU’s stingy defensive efforts have attributed to the Mountaineers success this season. WVU leads the conference with a 33.4 field goal percentage defense, which ranks fourth nationally. Additionally, WVU’s 6.4 blocks per game lead the Big 12 and are sixth in the NCAA. Offensively, WVU is shooting 44.5 percent from the field which is third in the league and 29th nationally.
Holmes remains the Big 12’s active career leading scorer with 1,837 points. The senior paces WVU with 17.0 points per game, which is third in the conference. Lanay Montgomery leads the Mountaineers with an average 8.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. The Pittsburgh native’s 61.7 field goal percentage is second in the league. Teana Muldrow is second on the team with 10.5 points per game.
Following Saturday’s game, the Mountaineers return home to face No. 21 Oklahoma in a 7 p.m. tilt at the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
